SS15′s Cup Match Runnings

As promised, it’s Wednesday and here’s another post for your reading pleasure.

In the previous post I said I would elaborate on the back-story of the M-SEW SS15collection “Cup Match Runnings“.

Firstly I’ll give a brief history to the annual game.

Cup Match is Bermuda’s annual holiday that revolves around cricket. The east of the island – team St.George’s – goes against the west – team Somerset, battling for the silver cup. Close to Cup Match locals represent their teams by wearing their team colours: St. George’s = dark blue and light blue, Somerset = red and dark blue.

Introduced after the abolition of slavery, Cup Match began as annual picnics that were held in rotation at each teams lodges. Since 1947 Cup Match has been held on the Thursday and Friday closest to Aug 1st. And since 1999 day one has been officially Emancipation day and day two – Somers’ Day, which pays tribute to the arrival of Admiral Sir George Somers’ who colonized Bermuda in 1609. These two days host the annual Bermuda Cup Match – a unique two day holiday tradition.

Focusing mainly on Alma “Champ” Hunt – a Bermudian cricket player in the 1920′s to 40′s, “A prodigious all-rounder, he dominated the local game as a player and administrator for more than 50 years” (Bermuda Biographies) with traditional cricket whites and infusing vintage American sportswear into the collection for a more feminine touch.

The Cup Match Runnings collection for SS15 is a revisited project from a design brief at university that was not explored to the fullest. If you were to check back in the M-SEW archives of the blog, you can view the original line up and a few development pages. The collection has evolved from the first attempt into something worth waiting for and much anticipated for this upcoming SS15 season!

Studio update:

We are working on some sweatshirts at the moment that reflect the essence of the upcoming SS15 collection. They will available soon so one can have a part of the collection before it even comes out!
